Introductory Rider Skills Course

Introductory Rider Skills Course (IRSC)

The thought of learning to ride a motorcycle by attending a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) can be a worrying time for those that have never ridden before. Wondering whether or not they will be able to master the controls, and pick up the skills, all this whilst learning alongside other students. The IRSC course is aimed at riders who need to build confidence, it is NOT aimed at riders who can already ride a motorcycle or novices who find learning to ride easy.

The CBT has a laid down structure with students of all levels and ability from those that have ridden before to complete novices. The CBT is competency based this means that each student cannot progress onto the next skill until they have successfully completed the previous skill.  Despite the best efforts of the training schools it is not always easy to group riders of similar standards and abilities. It can be easy to feel that you are measuring your progress against other more experienced riders or to feel that you are holding back the progress of the other students within the group. There is also the added pressure of committing financially to the full cost of a CBT without knowing if you will like it or even able to achieve it.

Pro - Scot do not want anyone to feel they are under pressure to progress when they don't feel ready or that they feel they are the worst in the group.
This is where our IRSC course becomes a real advantage.

The Aim Of The Introductory Rider Skills Course

The aim of the Introductory Rider Skills Course (IRSC) is to provide a gentle introduction to learning to ride a motorcycle without the pressure of a full day structured CBT course or having to learn in a larger group. The course has no laid down structure and is therefore tailored to suit the learning needs of each individual. A CBT generally usually takes approximately 8 hours to complete, combine this with a minimum of a 2 hour on-road session at the end of the day and you can see why it can be tiring and demanding. For some students it can feel more like an endurance test, not the best introduction to learning to ride a motorcycle!

The  Course lasts 2 Hours, you will only be recommended onto the IRSC Course after attending for your free assessment lesson if you are having some difficulty learning the basics of balance, and machine control, and would benefit from more relaxed bespoke training before attending the CBT course. Approx 20% of our novice students are recommended onto our IRSC Course after attending our Free Taster Lesson. On the IRSC course you will be taught.

  • How to move off and stop
  • Slow speed control and balance
  • Slow speed steering exercises
  • Controlled braking

The feedback from students attending our IRSC course has been excellent, with riders stating that it really helped to build their confidence first before attending the CBT. Students who attented our IRSC course are now mostly achieving the CBT on their first visit. Once you have completed the IRSC course and can achieve the basics above you can book onto our CBT course with confidence.

  • Before attending please remember to bring both parts of your licence and glasses if required.
  • Please note this course is NOT a CBT, you will not be issued with a CBT certificate upon completion of the IRSC course.
  • Although the training is not recognised by the DSA in terms of issuing a certificate of competence, it will make learning to ride a motorcycle and attending the CBT course so much easier for you if you happen to be in the 20% of novice students who need more time to develop their skills gradually.
