The New Motorcycle Test

The new motorcycle test was introduced on April 27th, to comply with the 2rd European Directive. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) have compiled a list of FAQ's with answers about the new motorcycle test.

The new test is designed to reduce the number of motorcycle casualties which were in some cases caused through poor machine control and a lack of rider skill. The new test now consists of two parts., Module 1 and Module 2. Module 1 takes part on a Multi Purpose Test Center (MPTC) a large area of tarmac measuring approx 120m x 40m. The test lasts approx 10 minutes although you can expect to be at the test center for approx 20 - 25 minutes. Module 1 tests the motorcyclists machine control and balance with a variety of different exercises as follows:

  • Manual Handling (Assesses students ability to hold and walk the motorcycle under full control)
  • On And Off The Stand (Assesses students correct and safe use of stand)
  • Slalom (Assesses students balance, steering and slow speed motorcycle control)
  • Figure Of Eight (Assesses students balance, steering and slow speed motorcycle control)
  • Cornering (Assesses students ability to ride round safely around the curve or bend)
  • Hazard Avoidance (Assesses students ability to change direction quickly whilst under full control, achieving a minimum speed of 50Kph/32mph)
  • Controlled Braking (Assesses students ability to bring the motorcycle to a controlled stop within a designated area, making use of both brakes under full control)
  • U-Turn (Assesses students ability to turn the motorcycle around in a U-Turn within a specified distance, under full control and balance with effective observations)
  • Slow Speed Ride (Assesses students ability to ride the motorcycle at walking pace, without losing control or balance over a specified distance)
  • Emergency Stop (Be able to stop the motorcycle under full control promptly, achieving a minimum speed of 50Kph/32mph)

Module 1 must be passed before the candidate can sit Module 2. Module 2 takes part out on the open roads with the examiner following, this test lasts approx 35 minutes. The new Module 2 test is very similar to the previous motorcycle test with the exception that the Emergency Stop and U - Turn manoeuvres are no longer tested, due to the fact that they are now tested in Module 1. The time now saved with the removal of the Emergency Stop & U - Turn means that the examiner now has additional time to carry out a proper assessment of cornering techniques instead of simply riding around town. Our training will make sure that you are well prepared for your motorcycle test and beyond.

As a school we are already returning a very impressive pass rate on Module 1, with an overall pass rate of between 80 - 90%. This has been due in the main to the high levels of training delivered by Pro - Scot and the fact that we are one of the few schools who book practice on the actual MPTC area so that you can get an opportunity to make sure you are well prepared.

We have been hearing horror stories of students who have been crashing and injuring themselves whilst carrying out the higher speed manoeuvres, this should not happen, with professional training. You can follow this link to see the actual MPTC area, the test requirements and DSA's official video. Here are some of the comments from our students who passed soon after the introduction of the new style test:

Craig Main "Very professional staff, New test seemed beneficial"

Barrie Ovens "All staff really helpful and friendly, Module 1 was really helpful"

Michael Duff  "DAS easy with Pro - Scot, Mod 1 simple, Mod 2 just as easy. Job done with minimal training. Cheers"
