Check your Motorcycle Licence

Do I have the right entitlement for a CBT?

This is Compulsory Basic Training, and is the starting point for learning to ride. It validates the provisional portion of your licence allowing you to ride a moped or 125cc.

Before attending your CBT, you will need to provide us with your unique licence check code number. To find this number you will need to go on GOV.UK website and enter your driving licence number and your National Insurance number. You will be provided with a unique code. We use this code on the day of your CBT to check for any penalty points or disqualifications that might prevent you from being able to do your CBT. This is a legal requirement and must be carried out by all Approved Motorcycle Training Body’s (ATB).

What licence do I need?

To take part in a CBT training course you need one of these:

  • A full valid UK car licence with category A provisonal entitlement.
  • A provisional licence with valid provisional motorcycle entitlement (Category A) - for 125cc entitlement.
  • A provisional licence with valid provisional provisional moped entitlement (Category P) - for riding a 50cc moped.

You can use the DirectGov licence checking service online to see what vehicles you are licensed to drive.

How do I check my licence?

Checking your licence can be a bit of a pain, there are different types depending on the year of issue. Follow the guide below, if you have any questions then please contact us direct.

Your entitlement will be listed on either your photocard or your paper licence.

Firstly, check your photocard (if you have one)

If you have a photocard then check that first. If you do not have a photocard licence then skip to Paper Licence section below.

  • Check your card rear, looking at the categories section.
  • Look for Category A (125cc) or...
  • Category P for 50cc Moped.
  • If you have Cat A, you can sit your CBT on a 125cc.
  • If you have Cat P, you can sit your CBT on a 50cc Moped.

Check your older format paper licence...

If you don't have a photocard then you will have the older paper Licence. Much like the photcard, this will show your entitlement.

  • Look for the entitlement section...
  • Look for Category A (125cc) or...
  • Category P for 50cc Moped.
  • If you have Cat A, you can sit your CBT on a 125cc.
  • If you have Cat P, you can sit your CBT on a 50cc Moped.

If you have the old paper licence then remember to bring your passport as proof of ID on your CBT day!

I don't have a licence what should I do?

If you do not hold any licence, application forms can be collected from larger Post Offices (form D1) or ordered from the Directgov site

If you hold an EU licence but do not have a UK counterpart (D58/2) showing provisional entitlement, then you will need to phone the DVLA on 0300 790 6801 and ask them for a D9 form, or alternatively you can download an application form here.

If your licence is from outside the EU and you are able to swap it to a UK licence then you will need form D1. For a list of countries which are able to convert their licences to a UK one, please visit the DirectGov Countries page.

For all fee information and a wealth of other licensing information, visit the Directgov website or contact the DVLA via telephone on 0300 790 6801.
