What Our 'Class of 2023' Instructors Say
We have built our reputation by not letting people down and delivering on our promises. We can also back it up with real figures and real testimonials from real instructors. This is very rare in this industry! Especially where the large national driving instructor training schools are concerned. Put simply we provide the best ORDIT training and the best ongoing support once you qualify and join our team to ensure your success.
Please read our website fully to discover why ProScot are so unique and why this industry is filled with many unscrupulous training organisations, set up to catch out the unwary and ill-informed taken in by the assertive and persistent time-share sales tactics and false promises.
What better way of finding out what it’s really like to train and to become a driving instructor with ProScot than to hear it first-hand from those in the know. We asked our driving instructors to tell us about their own personal experience with ProScot and what it’s like to be a driving instructor. Here are their individual and personal stories exactly as they wrote them. You might be able to relate to their individual stories…The latest below comes from the CLASS OF 2023.........

“Mel qualified in April '23, Mel became the first of our class of '23. Passing first time with a solid score of 38 with good feedback from the examiner. Mel's journey..."I’ve been a fully qualified driving instructor with Proscot since end of April 2023. Before I’d thought about becoming an instructor I worked in retail for almost 10 years, never feeling fulfilled. I ended up researching how to become an instructor and the abilities I needed, and looking into different companies and the prices they charge. I then came across ProScot who were offering free training. They were a local, small company which was a big plus for me, I didn’t want to be just another number like the larger UK wide franchises. Once I met up with John Macdonald (ProScot's director) and we discussed the training process, I only had to wait a few hours before I was selected to train and join the team. John and the 3 girls in office (Ingrid, Amy and Kali) are all wonderful, very friendly, and happy to help with any questions you have, especially at the start as I had many.”
“During the training I had moments where I got nervous and thought this was too hard and might not be for me but John never gave up and helped me push through and believe in myself. Before the final test in April, I went through a final stage of training with John and Archie Douglas, another highly experienced trainer who helps out ProScot's PDI's with additional support. Archie is also a retired senior examiner, he's really patient and knows his stuff. He watches us during real lessons with pupils and helps to fix any problems you’re having. Then with their final guidance and support I managed to pass on my first try. John was even there waiting to give me a hug after I’d passed, I couldn’t even believe it happened.”
“I’m so grateful I carried on and didn’t give up, as now I see what a rewarding career being an instructor can be. Getting to see your pupils start from scratch having never been in a driver’s seat and a big bag of nerves, to that final day when they pass with confidence and having the biggest grin ever, it’s one of the best feelings you could imagine.I would 100% recommend ProScot to anyone wanting to learn to be an instructor, if you are committed to them there is no end to the help and support they provide." “""When I saw ProScot's advertisement to become a Driving Instructor with FREE training, my first reaction was this sounds great but what's the catch with the free training. The answer is none - there is no catch! Having used ProScot in the past to attain my motorcycle licence, I knew what I was getting into. A local, well-established driving / motorcycle school with an excellent reputation. After sending in an initial email of interest to the office, I received a speedy reply stating that I'd have an initial chat with John Macdonald (the Director of ProScot) via telephone, and then be invited in for a face to face chat with John and Ingrid (one of the three incredible office staff) to see if I'd be suitable for the job.”
“Thankfully, I got accepted. A job that I had fancied doing for several years had become a reality. It was both an exciting yet daunting moment - having to leave a job of 10 years with a good pension and job security to being self employed. With that being said, I knew I was doing the right thing to pursue a career as a Driving Instructor. A job that would provide satisfaction and a real challenge. The process then begun to become a Driving Instructor soon after being accepted. I applied for my disclosure, followed by booking, studying and passing part 1 (theory test) of 3 tests. Part 2 is a test of your driving ability - the training is carried out by John Macdonald, one of the best and top rated ORDIT trainers in the UK! Not only did we receive hours of in-car training, we were provided with hours and hours of high quality theory sessions to assist our practical via zoom sessions and voice notes.”
“After successfully passing part 1 and 2 on the first attempt, it was all eyes on part 3 now - my instructional ability. With more high quality theory sessions provided by John via zoom, it was time to jump in the car to receive even more training. At this stage, we were way ahead of where other schools would be due to John's thorough training which is second to none. After successfully completing the Intensive part 3 training, it was time to head out on my pink badge as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor). Whilst working as a trainee, additional training was given by the well respected Archie Douglas (a former trainer of examiners and now a Driving Instructor Trainer) to help us deliver high quality lessons and assist us on the way to a part 3 pass.”
“I passed my part 3 on the first attempt after being on a trainee licence for 4 months. If I had picked another Driving School to go with, there's no chance I would have passed. I see PDI's getting let down time and time again by national companies all too often. If it wasn't for Proscot, I don't think I would have qualified as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor).”
“ProScot is in the process of building a strong team of Instructors, a place where you're part of a team and given unlimited support by the office staff, fellow Instructors and John -you won't get that anywhere else! You also pick the hours, days and times that suit your lifestyle, how many other jobs can you do that in? Pupils are provided by the office should you request them which is provided in the franchise, so you don't have to worry about getting no work. This is by no means an easy training course or job, if you apply yourself fully, you will succeed with John's incredible work ethic and equally high pass rate. If you're looking to become a Driving Instructor, look no further than ProScot. We're always encouraged to "shop local" so why do the opposite when looking for your new career!" “Our "Class of '23" continues with Paul Cunningham (DVSA ADI. Paul also passed first time with a very rare Grade A and a score of 44 out of a maximum of 51. 31 out of 51 is the minimum pass mark. This is a very high score and was reflected in the examiners feedback. Here's Paul's story..."When I decided I wanted to pursue a career as a driving instructor there was only one school I had in mind for my training, ProScot. I myself was taught to drive by a ProScot instructor and I have always considered Proscot to have the highest quality instructors with a great reputation. So after having an initial chat with the director of ProScot, John MacDonald, my mind was made up.”
“The training for the part 2 and part 3 tests are all conducted by John himself, who is an ORDIT trainer, the standard he expects and gets you to for the part 2 test is well above and beyond what's required and I feel that's what sets ProScot apart from other Schools. The Part 3 training is done to the exact same high standards, and John has also enlisted the help of ex driving examiner and instructor trainer, Archie Douglas, to make sure that the standards of the PDI's out on the trainee badge are kept high.”
“Both John and Archie will give their full support from start to finish, helping in any and every way they can to ensure every PDI has the best chance possible to pass first time and become an ADI. I know I would never have done this without John's training and support and to be a part of ProScot is an honour and a privilege." Paul Cunningham ” Hide...

“Our "Class of '23" continues with Lisa Herd (DVSA ADI). Lisa also qualified on first attempt. With zero minors in her Part 2 drive and a solid pass for the Part 3 test. Here's Lisa's story..."I was a social care worker in a nursing home in my local village of Anstruther. My eldest daughter was learning to drive, which gave me the inspiration to contact a few driving training schools to enquire about becoming an instructor. I also have another 2 children that will soon need to learn to drive. I wanted a job where I could choose my own hours to suit my family life. The other schools I contacted provided flashy brochures and made it sound like a dream job. However, I am no fool to a sales pitch! When I contacted ProScot, I left my details. I expected another brochure in the post. This was not the case.”
“Within an hour or 2 John Macdonald called me and we had a lengthy discussion about the process, he was very honest with me and told me that it takes a lot of commitment determination and drive (forgive the pun). He explained that he would train me personally along with Archie Douglas, an ex dvsa examiner and instructor trainer.I immediately felt supported unlike the other training schools where other trainees, or newly qualified ADI's train you. John and Archie were both invested in me and committed to helping me pass the tests. it was a tough journey, and still is to a certain degree. I went through phases of feeling frustrated, not sure if I’d made the right decision. Then after passing the part 2 test with zero minors, I found the belief in myself that John and Archie had in me from the beginning. Then came the Part 3 training! It has to be one of the hardest things I’ve done. I questioned myself all the time. I slacked off with the training voice messages and really struggled. I had numerous conversations with other people in my position and John himself and decided to dig deep, pull my socks up and decided failure was not an option!”
“I qualified in July this year and look back at the amount of time and energy I invested to become a driving instructor and do not regret it for a single moment. I manage my own diary and students and by doing so I have the time to do the school runs, be home for dinner most nights and earn a decent amount. The journey you go on with a student learning to drive is very rewarding and when they pass the practical test, there is no greater feeling. I am invested in my students the way John and Archie were invested in me. The girls in the office are all amazing and any query is dealt with quickly and efficiently. It really is a driving school family, not a big national company that when you pay your money, you have to figure it out for yourself! Thank you to all ProScot for the opportunities this has given me" Lisa Herd.” Hide...

Lindsay also qualified as a driving instructor on her very first attempt with a solid pass. She also had an examiner assessing the examiner! Check out the examiners feedback, you'll see Lindsay is a very cool lady under pressure. Here's Lindsay's story. "I started looking into becoming an ADI at the start of 2022 after seeing an advert for Bill Plant on a job website. I hadn’t seen any Bill Plant cars in the area, but I had seen ProScot cars which were advertising training. The ProScot website provided a lot more information on it about the process to become an instructor compared to Bill Plant and I liked the idea of being with a local company. I got in touch with them and spoke to John who put me in touch with some of his current instructors to get more of an idea of what would be involved in becoming fully qualified. I met up with one of the instructors, Andrew, for a coffee and a chat and spoke to the girls in the office. This was helpful and swayed my decision to join the team. I love driving and the thought of helping others to enjoy it too spurred me on to have an assessment with John to see if my driving would be up to standard.”
“I started the process fully in August 2022, completing my Part 1. I went through the next stage of training hoping to sit the Part 2 test in November but had some personal setbacks and finally sat the test in March 2023. Throughout this time John provided a variety of in-depth training including Zoom, messages and in-person as well as recommending books to read. Being in group chats with others that were also training up was a huge comfort throughout this time as we could all rely on each other for support and learn from one another. I went on my trainee badge in April this year, following on from more extensive training and continued to train with Archie Douglas and John whilst out on the badge.”
“This was a massive learning curve, and it takes a lot of determination to get through it all as it gets very intense but it’s more than worth it. I passed the final Part 3 test in September first time. The support, training and knowledge that both John and Archie have provided has been incredible. I’m thankful for the opportunity they’ve provided to help me start this new career!" Lindsay Forsyth.” Hide...

James's story...."About halfway through 2022 I started to look into becoming a driving instructor whilst I was working in the railway. I wanted to find a new career that I could have some more control over my time off as well as doing a job that I could make a difference in. Initially I had gone through the first few stages with RED Driving School because they were the first result in a quick google search but a few days after I came across an advert on Facebook for ProScot and offering training to be a driving instructor. I recognised the design of the logo from the cars I had seen in my local area so I went onto their website to find out more. Their website had so much more information than the RED website and gave much more insight into the process as a whole and what to expect. I got in touch with the girls in the office and they arranged an initial phone call with John to get to know each other and that turned into an interview. The next day I had emails and information from the office about my next steps and how to move forward.”
“After I had passed my part one I was added into the WhatsApp group chat with other people training at the same time as myself along with lots of training material (voice notes, zoom meetings, messages and interactive exercises between the group and John etc). There was a lot of training material to work through but if you put the effort in with the training you absolutely reap the rewards at the other end. That also applies to the in car training from John and Archie as well , when out of a trainee license. I am now lucky enough to be fully qualified with a solid first time pass and to be one of the 18% that qualify. It’s an amazing feeling watching your pupil pass their test and to know you’ve been a part of that journey and helping to put good quality drivers on the roads!"James McAra-Briggs ” Hide...

“When I first approached John in 2005, I had already been for an interview with Instructor College (now Red Driving School). I was immediately struck by the different approach. Whereas one was all about signing you up to a £3000 non-refundable course, John was at pains to point out that at Proscot you only pay for training needed. In other words, the harder you work the less training you need so less cost. This seemed a sensible and honest approach.”
“The training itself was of a high quality, usually 1 to 1 in the car, although occasionally you would sit in on another lesson to give a different perspective. A driving lesson viewed from the back seat is totally different from that in the front! Lessons were delivered in a down to earth friendly manner with a full recap at the end.”
“When I passed my part 3 Proscot built me up quickly with decent pupils and provided me with back up to any problems I might encounter as a rookie on the road for the 1st time. Proscot have always fostered a professional ethos and image which others try to emulate but in my opinion few if any have managed. That's the reason I have remained with them for over 16 busy years.” Hide...

Training
“I was looking for a change of career in 2012 and, having decided I wanted to be a driving instructor, I spent some time researching how to go about it. Choosing the best form of training was very important to me and the only company I ultimately approached was ProScot. I did so because I liked the sound of what felt the more personal approach that ProScot can deliver in comparison to what the bigger national schools offer - I also preferred to use a local company with high visibility and a strong reputation. Having had an initial telephone conversation with Director John Macdonald, we arranged to meet with John asking me to give him a driving lesson on a specific subject so that he could assess my potential. Immediately, therefore, John was giving me responsibility to prepare properly for our first meeting and that gave me a good indication of what to expect.”
“Thankfully John agreed to train me and my earlier feeling about the personal nature of the training was 100% correct. Every minute of his training was done in the car and the only private study that had to be done was on my own time. This meant that all the time spent with John was devoted to the practical aspects of delivering driving lessons and applying the theoretical knowledge I was also learning. John always made clear what the next session would cover so I could do my homework and be ready for what was coming next.”
“I really loved the fact that training could be done in a shared environment where two PDIs were in the car at the same time, one teaching and the other observing. It was a brilliant way to learn by having a period of time in the passenger seat, understanding how to deliver lessons with John role playing various standards of driver and only doing what you asked him to do - he'd get better when you instructed him correctly, and then having a spell in the back of the car able to watch and gain experience as the other person was taking their turn in the front. Having a training partner was incredibly helpful and it was a great way to bounce ideas off each other and share the learning process together.”
“John pours his heart and soul into his work and his track record as a trainer is second to none. He really will go the extra mile to help you. Yes, it can feel like hard work at times (for John too, I'm sure) however the end result is so worth it. I qualified in 2013 and I now enjoy an incredibly rewarding career thanks to the time, patience, perseverance, trust, and faith that John showed in me. If I was doing it all over again, I've no reason to do it any differently and you'll be in the best possible hands if you have John as your driving trainer.”
Office Staff
“The team that works in the office in Kirkcaldy are all very experienced in their jobs and they provide a high level of support when it is needed. It is nothing like speaking with someone in a call centre, as you get to know everyone personally and you know exactly who you are dealing with at any given time. Each member of the team will gladly provide you with whatever assistance you may need, especially in the early days after you have qualified and are still finding your feet. With new customers always having a dedicated initial point of contact to speak with someone whilst instructors are working, it creates a good first impression of the ProScot business.”
Franchise
“The franchise model at ProScot has always worked for me given that I know I don't have to worry about finding work on my own. The power of the ProScot name and brand means that there is always somebody looking for driving lessons in your area. Even when you first start up after qualification, you will have as full a diary as you want within a very short period of time, and you always have the flexibility to work whenever and wherever you choose to do so. I welcome that flexibility and it suits me perfectly. Being in full control of my day is one of the reasons that I decided to train to become a driving instructor and I have never regretted the career change nor the decision to join, and stay with, the team at ProScot. John's dedication to the business, and to everyone who represents ProScot, is absolute and he'll always have your back. It's a franchise that will not let you down.” Hide...

Proscot was the only one that gave me the flexibility I required to complete my training whilst still working at my previous job. I used to work different shifts every day. “After passing my final exam I was still given all the support that I needed. I was given a mentor; my instructor was always on the other end of the phone but the most help I got after passing was from the office staff at ProScot. I found the new job quite overwhelming to begin with and I was not sure if I was going to stick with it. After talking to the staff at ProScot they gave me some invaluable advice that made me stay, which turned out to possibly be the best decision I’ve ever made. I now have a job that I love. I work the times and days that suit me. I also don’t have to travel far between lessons. I get the pupils I want in the locations that I want.” Hide...

“One of the best aspects of getting started was the buddy system. This is pairing you up with an experienced ProScot instructor in your area. This provides invaluable experience on knowing where specific roads / areas are good for beginners, then intermediate etc. Knowing where the really challenging areas are means you don’t just stumble across them unaware of what your student might do and how you will react while still inexperienced yourself. Introduction to the Test Centre and knowing what to expect before taking your first student for their test builds confidence. I always found John and the team generous with their time and very supportive, including financially, of my needs when dealing with unexpected illness and family bereavements. “Becoming a driving instructor was something I had always wanted to do due to my love for driving and fond memories supporting my children through the process of gaining their license. After a career change in 2012, I decided to take the plunge into the world of driving instruction after researching where best to start. I strive for excellence in everything I do and, therefore, sought out companies who could provide me with the best training available. ProScot are a highly reputable company, offering exactly what I was looking for. I also liked the fact that they are local and well known in the area. My brother-in-law pointed me in the direction of ProScot, having been a motorbike instructor with them, and encouraged me to phone the office to book an appointment with John Macdonald. We arranged an assessment drive which was both enjoyable and relaxed. John made me feel at ease behind the wheel; he was very honest about my driving skills and was confident I would be an excellent driving instructor. I really appreciated ProScot’s flexible approach to my training, as I worked full time night shift at the time. John fitted tuition around my busy schedule; sometimes on an individual basis and other times where there were up to three other drivers in the car. As a result of my nightshift work, it took me slightly longer than normal to complete my training. However, John really went the extra mile with me to ensure I completed my training at times that best suited me. Throughout my training, John always gave me good advice, encouraging me to trust my gut instinct. This still resonates with me nine years after qualifying and continues to provide me with support and advice.”
Office Staff
“The girls and other office staff went above and beyond from day one, to ensure I had a full diary within three weeks of qualifying. They also made sure I was paired up with a local ProScot instructor in St Andrews to show me the local routes and ropes. I know that the office staff are there at the end of the phone and nothing is too much trouble for them. If I have any questions or queries, they are quick to answer and have the knowledge and experience to help resolve any issues. They are all extremely helpful and approachable which eased the transition into my new career as a driving instructor. ”
Franchise
“Working with a franchise was something totally new to me. However, the ProScot model and process really helped get my career off to a great start. ProScot’s strong brand awareness made finding clients easy whether it be from the office or direct contact. Having a highly visible online presence means potential clients come across ProScot, and their team of experienced driving instructors, through various platforms. Additionally, as part of the franchise, I have access to an online app as an electronic diary which makes scheduling my lessons simple and straight forward. Brand awareness, alongside the ability to manage my own diary, significantly contributed to my decision to become a driving instructor. The benefits that come with the franchise made joining ProScot, and remaining part of the team, a no brainer. John and the ProScot team operate a highly professional franchise and are excellent to work with. ” Hide...

“Before I joined ProScot I was job hunting after a redundancy. On an employment website, an offer for training with an English Driving School expanding to Scotland appeared. with great reviews on a good-looking website. I did my research through Companies House and after a call from their Managing Director I was offered a position based in Kirkcaldy. Their offer came through the mail with colour brochures and a training pack to start studying PART 1. Before I could study their online training material, I paid £3,600 for ALL 3 PARTS. I passed PART 1! Overnight the business was reported to have gone into Administration. They ran off with my money! Other Driving Instructors in the same position, posted online they couldn’t get access to the office, Directors, or Training Instructors. I continued training on my own for PART 2 and received some help from a retired Advanced Driving Assessor from IAM RoadSmart. We were scammed! It was impossible to get my money back on the credit card used. The Bank argued that I had NOT had a breach of contract as I passed PART 1 and PART 2, even though I provided proof that I had not had any in car PART 2 training from them.”
“Reading that many of the scammed victims were approaching other large reputable known active Driving Schools in England, I did likewise and was offered a franchise opportunity. They advised me I had a 14-day cancellation period and payments in instalments, rather than a lump sum and I would have a full diary and Fife work only. Turns out that was incorrect!”
“The Managing Director of ProScot, John MacDonald was on holiday out of the UK. When John returned and his staff informed him, I had called to speak with him, he immediately contacted me, willing to offer me an assessment. If successful, he would provide me full support to get through PART 3 and become a FRANCHISEE with ProScot. John set aside time almost immediately and after passing the assessment he advised me to call the Driving School and exercise my 14-day cancellation option. That would ensure that I received a full refund. He then proceeded to make time available for me in his already very busy schedule to start and receive the full training needed to get me prepared for my PART 3 assessment, which I passed first time, graded A, thanks to John. John is an amazing Trainer, with multiple related qualifications and years of experience in running a successful Driving School and a very high pass rate of training PDI’s. The training was intense and thorough, and John invited me to sit in on other training. This was invaluable, learning from others’ experiences. John played many different roles so that we could experience the range of learners we could encounter. We were also trained for fault recognition, analysis, and correction. John aims to get all those that he has trained to the highest standard possible, which is passed on to our learners. This standard is recognised by the Senior Examiners in the PART 3 assessment and grading, and by Examiners when out on test. My current statistics on tests are all well above average and would not have been possible without John’s support.” Hide...

History
“For many years I had considered becoming a driving instructor but for one reason or another I never got round to it. At the time I was working in the corporate world but had become jaded and disillusioned until one day I decided to research how to become an instructor. I researched the Gov.uk website and gathered enough information to then Google driving schools, with my initial thoughts heading towards the well-established schools such as the AA, RED, BSM, however my research led me to see that these schools were a bit too corporate for me and that is something I wanted to avoid. On further investigation I came across ProScot and having seen many of their learner cars in my area I decided to check them out and after pouring over their website and reading testimonials from students I decided to contact them. A few hours later I was speaking with John Director and Principal Instructor of ProScot and within a few minutes I was struck by John’s enthusiasm, professionalism, and expertise and how easily our conversation flowed. John invited me along to meet in person and observe me on an assessment drive. Again, his enthusiasm for all things driving really stuck with me and he seemed like a decent guy which made put me at ease and once the drive was over, we did a little role play (John played the role of a learner and I an instructor), which was quite good fun, and we were soon arranging for me to begin training. I successfully passed my Theory Test and once all background checks were complete, I was keen to get involved.”
Training
“Training to become an instructor comprises three stages, Part 1, the Theory
Part 2, Driving ability test
Training for Part 2 saw John and I in the car on a one-to-one basis where I soon realised that although I thought I was a decent driver there was need for improvement if I was to pass the test. The test itself is a 1 hour and 20-minute drive, performing all the manoeuvres but with less than 6 minor faults. Training for this with John was relaxed yet intense at the same time which I found to be a good balance and once the training was complete, I sat and passed the test. Part 3, Instructional ability
Part 3 is where John trains you in Instructional ability and, I’m not going to lie I really struggled with this side of things, I just could not get my head round the training at all and what was more frustrating was that I could do it but just not teach it. Very soul destroying for me, however this is where John came into his own, adjusting his teaching style when needed, sometimes the carrot sometimes the stick, whatever worked at the time. It really was tough going at times, but John believed in me and although I failed my first attempt at Part 3, John was there to support me and encouraged me to keep going and with some extra training I passed second time round. Had it not been for John I think I may have given up (a thought which occurred to me on more than one occasion) but here I am seven or so years later and now a Senior Instructor!! ”
Why do I enjoy working with ProScot?
“When I first qualified, ProScot set me up with a learner car complete with decals and dual controls, and promised me a full diary within 2-3 weeks, with the first couple of weeks franchise-free and then graded payments until my diary was full. They delivered on that promise and have supplied me with as many students as I need when I need them.”
“The girls in the office are amazing, always there to lend an ear, help with paperwork (and sometimes make a coffee if you decide to pop into the office). Always ready with a smile and some banter, nothing is too much trouble for them and if you need help, they will step up for you.”
“Franchise-free weeks throughout the year (your entitlement to these increases each year), which can be used anytime you wish, particularly good for summer holidays and Christmas when your money is needed elsewhere!”
“Recently I had some personal issues, but ProScot had my back and for that I will be forever grateful. I am my own boss and rather than working for ProScot I like to think I work with them. Couple of nights out a year which is always good. Structured career starting as an instructor, with the opportunity of working towards Senior Instructor, and then Principal Instructor. Always encouraged by the office staff and John to improve and adapt with advice only a phone call away.”
“Being honest I wish I had become an instructor years before I did but maybe Karma played a part in that, maybe the timing was just right for me to join ProScot, but whatever the reason one thing is for certain I would never have had made it without them and I certainly would not have managed it through the 'corporate schools'” Hide...

“If you go back ten years to 2012, I was working in a factory. It paid well but it was a very unsatisfying job. I wanted something more engaging. I didn’t feel satisfied in this current career. After looking around for ideas I stumbled across becoming a driving instructor. As I enjoyed both driving and working with other people, I decided to look further into becoming an ADI. It didn’t take much research to find out that Pro-Scot was the best driving instructor training school in my area, so I contacted them. ”
“I spoke to Pro-Scot’s director and head Instructor trainer John Macdonald, and he explained the entire process of qualifying to become an ADI, what kind of person it took to be an ADI and gave me a realistic idea of what the job was like. ”
“After our conversation I was sold, so I met up with John to carry out a short analysis of my driving as well as a brief introduction to instructing a pupil (I got a chance to instruct John in a roleplay scenario as a beginner pupil) It wasn’t long before I was enrolled in Pro-Scot’s ADI training programme. I received great support from both John and the office staff, along with the other Pro-Scot ADI’s I met, and very quickly felt like one of the team. Because of my work schedule at the factory, I was limited in the time that I could spend with John training, but he catered to me, and we were able to work together to get me through the programme. Approximately 6 months or so layer, I was a fully qualified driving instructor. I was able to quit my job at the factory and Pro-Scot helped to build my diary up with students at a very fast rate.”
“It’s currently 2022 and I’m still with Pro-Scot. Over the years they have been very supportive and helpful to me. Ingrid, Amy, and Kally in the office, and John and the other ADI’s have helped not only build up my business as a driving instructor but also my confidence as a person. I’ve never been an overly confident person, but they have helped me to believe in myself.”
“To give you an example of the support available at Pro-Scot, I recently had some questions about instructing and some changes in the industry. I phoned John, and he gave me two hours of his time to discuss my questions and alleviate my concerns. He never once made me feel like I was taking up too much of his time. I’ve had similar scenarios with the office staff and the other Pro-Scot instructors. They are always extremely supportive and will help me whenever I am stuck. The office staff are always at the end of the phone for me and the other instructors, and always have my corner. ”
“Being an ADI is the most rewarding career I have ever done. I’ve worked a few jobs (factory worker, shop assistant) but none of those challenged or excited me like this job. To see people from all walks of life progress and become independent drivers is something that never gets tiring, even 9+ years in this career at time of writing. ”
“I’m very grateful and fortunate to have this career. Not only is it a career that I very much enjoy, but it is also very flexible. Often people ask me how many hours I must work, and my answer is always the same - as much as I want. Pro-Scot never push me to do hours I don’t want to do. I get to choose the hours and days I want to work. I’m also not required to travel too far. I can stay within my catchment area, so I don’t spend too much time driving between different clients. ”
“As said above, it’s the most rewarding career I have ever done. Almost ten years in, I’m still enjoying it and want to keep doing it for many more years to come.” Hide...

“Being a father of 3 kids, I was aware of how quickly they were starting to grow up and how much time I spent at work and how much time I was missing spending with them, so I decided it was time to start looking for a new career in 2012 that allowed me more family time. ”
“Having spent time racking my brains as to what I could possibly do I stumbled upon the idea of becoming a driving instructor, from this I then went online and done some research on training. Proscot stuck out and being from Kirkcaldy myself I liked the idea of it being what looked and sounded like a local family run business. ”
“From my 1st phone call to the office to enquire about driving instructor training it reassured me that my gut instinct to contact Proscot was the correct choice, the office then arranged for me to come in for a driving assessment with John the company director to assess suitably for a change to this career. ”
“On the day of my assessment, I turned up to the local office and was met by a very homely feeling office staff who are still with the company today and made me feel as welcome that 1st day as they do to this current day. I went out with John for my assessment which was to briefly teach John how to move off and stop safely, which I thought something I had done for 20+ years would be easy to explain how to do, it turns out I was wrong haha... ”
“After being out with John, he gave me very honest feedback which I appreciated and again reassured me that Proscot was looking like the way to go. I started my training at same time as another PDI which allowed us both a shot in front of car instructing and time in back of car observing, which definitely helped a lot as it allowed time to sit back and take all in after the pressure of being in the "hot" seat and allow the sweating to subside. ”
“During training John always pushed you and always had a knack of reading the individual to get the best out of us and let our ability shine through, I was always encouraged to let my own personality come through in training/lessons as well. Not going to lie training was hard and there were some tears and bad days but looking back it was what made me the instructor that I am today. ”
“I qualified as an instructor and have been part of the Proscot team since 2013. ”
“Throughout my training and my time as part of Proscot I have had lots of up and down personal moments as we all do in life, from family and personal issues and most recently (2021) a very real and serious health scare. During all this Proscot have always went above and beyond what you would expect from a Franchise. ”
“Returning to work after my recent health scare, I have been assisted in getting back to work by both the office and John at my own pace which has greatly helped not only from a financial point of view but a health one as well. ”
“So, into my 9th year of being a driving instructor and I am glad and happy to say that my initial gut instinct was correct of the family company Proscot are. ” Hide...

Training
“After my previous workplace closing in 2016, I was not just in need of a new job - I felt I needed a career change. I like cars, driving, meeting new people, and problem solving - so thought becoming a driving instructor would be a good career. I spent some time online researching and visiting various driving school websites to see what they can offer, but I was always drawn to ProScot. There are a few main reasons why I chose to train and work with ProScot over any other training provider. I remember seeing a ProScot driving school car years before I started my training, and first thought was "Wow that's a really cool looking car to learn to drive in". Driving instructors' cars always seemed boring, plain, and uninviting - but the branding on the ProScot cars just looked so professional and screamed quality. Once seen never forgotten. Another reason was that the school itself and the training provided was close by, so I didn't need to travel far or be away from home for long periods of time. Finally, and most importantly why I chose ProScot was the success rate. A large majority of people who begin the journey to become an instructor never make it, but ProScot had such an impressive success rate that I would be stupid to risk spending a small fortune in poor quality training with a high risk of it being for nothing. Not only did I want to become a driving instructor, but I needed this job and ProScot got me through it. After an initial assessment with John Macdonald, he agreed to train me. This was an honest meeting to see if he felt it would be worthwhile for me to begin the journey, rather than a company just taking my money knowing I would never have the skills to succeed. I believe no other school even offered this at the time. All training was in person, in the car. Zero boring classroom work or PowerPoint presentations. Occasionally I was also able sit in the back of the car and observe John training other instructors which really helped me progress and witness a range of different problems to solve. John really tries his best for you, and you can tell he is so passionate about the high-quality training he provides. Training was difficult, but it was well worth it and I'm happy I chose ProScot.”
Office
“Dealing with the office is great because you get to speak with real local people. I wouldn't like to deal with some strangers in a massive call centre a hundred miles away who don't even know you. They are friendly and give support when needed. They managed to provide me with so many pupils early on in my career almost instantly and continue to provide assistance when needed.”
Franchise
“The powerful brand and image of ProScot means I don't need to worry about finding work. I love that I am in full control of my diary - so I can pick and choose my own hours and am not tied to having to work unsociable hours or having to travel far for lessons due to the high volume of pupils coming to ProScot for lessons. I work hard but believe work it not the most important thing so I choose not work too many long hours. Having a life outside of work is needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain sane - the flexibility of being the boss of your own diary allows this. So far, I have not had any issues and feel ProScot really care and will be there for me whenever needed.” Hide...

“When I began my journey a few years back, I chose a local independent ORDIT instructor to train with. Going with an ORDIT instructor is something I highly recommend because they are fully approved by the DVSA to train you. It was quite the journey and must be one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I foresee my goals and knew I had the capability of becoming a driving instructor, so put my head down and kept up my determination until I reached my goal of becoming a qualified ADI.”
“Once I had passed and received my green badge, I found myself in new territory, not able to draw in enough students to run a full time business. This is where my knight in shining armour came in, John Macdonald (Director of ProScot). He was the only person locally, within the industry who was prepared to take me on. I gave one months’ notice to my current employer & on my first day of starting with ProScot, I had a full diary of 40 hours per week, courtesy of the office staff. I cannot thank ProScot enough, without them I would be unemployed as a driving instructor, thank you John.”
“Since I've been with ProScot the girls in the office have done an excellent job of assisting me to build my business within the franchise. Having piece of mind, knowing that when I wake up every morning, I will still have a job with one of the most reputable companies in the industry, is the reason I choose to stay with ProScot. ”
“Couple that with flexible hours, offering great work life balance, 6 weeks holidays a year, job satisfaction and competitive franchise fees. Why go anywhere else?”
“I recently ruptured my Achilles’ tendon, which was a shock to the system. Both John Macdonald (Director of ProScot) and the office staff were very supportive. I took time off work with no distractions and when I informed the girls in the office that I was ready to return, I had a full diary upon my first day back.”
“This is just some of the benefits of working with a franchise, no distractions of new clients calling you during lesson, when you have full time office staff. Thank you, Ingrid, Amy & Kally for all your hard work.” Hide...

“Having been made redundant twice from the Opencast Coal Mining, I decided it was time to do something for myself, But what? After a search on job sites, I came across some adverts for driving instructors. Having read some of the comments I decided to look for local driving schools.”
“I read and compared several driving schools and decided that ProScot was the better choice of all those I looked at. The reason I chose ProScot was the information and statistics far outweighed the others. I contacted ProScot and was invited to have a meeting and assessment with John Macdonald (ProScot’s Director), which I thankfully accepted. I had a successful driving assessment and then John asked me to give him instruction on how to move off and stop. Simple I thought to myself. I was like a rabbit caught in the headlights, stumbling and muttering trying to instruct how to carry this out. ”
“Talk about an eye opener, however at the end of my assessment John was happy to accept me onto the training course, which is conducted by John who is registered as an Ordit Instructor and is one of, if not the best in this industry. Training is structured so that it brings out the best in you. In my case it took a lot of patience from John, he never gives up on you, John will always encourage you to succeed. Before you go thinking that this will be easy, I can assure you it is not. It is a lot of hard work, study, and practice.”
“My intentions were to get qualified and start out on my own. Having read and discussed the Franchise options with John and other ADI's, I opted to join the ProScot franchise.”
“The support from the ladies in the office (Ingrid, Kally and Amy) is second to none. Their wealth of knowledge and experience is invaluable. From the day I first met them I was impressed. and today it is like having an extended family, everyone looking out for and helping each other. (Word of warning - never visit the office empty handed, munchies are always welcome).”

“I didn’t know quite where to start with the process so spoken to my own driving instructor who taught me years ago and (a long story short) I was pointed in the way of ProScot. From start to finish, everybody was very welcoming and helpful. The advice and support I received (and still receive to this day) are second to none. Even though the training was the hardest thing I’ve done it was also the most enjoyable and I was hooked instantly.”
“I really enjoy working with ProScot because it is a local company and does not feel like another franchise where you just feel like a number. This feels more like a family. As cliché as this sounds, it is true – at ProScot I feel they genuinely do care. ProScot gives you the support and training that you need but at the same time, it also gives you the flexibility to be your own instructor which is the best part. ”

“Around 3.5 years ago I started researching the idea of becoming a Driving Instructor. I was working in recruitment as I had done for 10 years and was really starting to get down about the 9-5, hard sales environment. I enjoyed the people element of my job and the satisfaction of helping someone achieve their goal (in this case, finding a new job) as well as coaching, training and mentoring people and wanted to use this experience and skills in a non-sales-based role whilst combined with working in an industry I was passionate about and could have a positive, long-lasting impact on. Teaching people to drive ticked a lot of boxes for me. ”
“I contacted all the known national instructor brands but was very quickly put off by the vagueness of their information and their hard sales pitch to get me to sign up for something (having worked in sales for 10 years, I knew instantly when I was being 'sold' to). The literature and websites were all shiny and gave the impression becoming a Driving Instructor was a formality, but I wasn't convinced and felt like I would be rushing into something I didn't yet completely understand. My wife had seen a couple of different ProScot cars driving around the area where we live and suggested looking them up and I'm so glad I did.”
“When I contacted the ProScot Office I was able to speak to one of the girls in the office who gave me specific information about what I could expect if I continued with them, what the training would involve and the amount of other ProScot drivers in my area who could help me once qualified. There was no sales pitch and no request for money upfront. I was provided with the details for John Macdonald, the founder and director of ProScot who arranged a call to have a further conversation. Again, there was no sales pitch or desperate attempt to sign up to something - just a very forthright and honest assessment of what the job entails and particularly the training involved. I then met John to have an assessment drive for him to see if my own driving was good enough to be able to teach someone else. I'm grateful for all the initial chats and assessments - it gave me a much better idea of what to expect in the training and a sign of the commitment required to be successful.”
Training
“The training for Part 2 and Part 3 is incredibly difficult and stressful. For anyone reading this with an idea this is an "easier" career choice because "they're a good driver" then please think again. I am a very good driver and really struggled with large parts of the training. John's knowledge of not just driving instruction but the entire automotive industry and his craft from a coaching and psychological perspective is incredible - it's very easy to feel intimated by it and feeling that is the standard to reach - but you must find a way past that and work towards gaining that kind of levels of expertise.”
“The training doesn't just include the hours when you're in the car doing role plays and practising etc. I lost entire weekends doing homework, watching YouTube videos, and reading through notes I'd taken. Without this, I would not have made it past Week 3. There were absolutely no shortcuts taken through training. I've now done around 7 months of live Instructor work on the road and there hasn't been one incident or situation that's happened that John hadn't prepared me for.”
“I realise now that the training was tough because it needed to be... (1) to prepare me for my final Part 3 exam and (2) for life on the road teaching. It's easy to forget that students learning to drive are exactly that - students - and they make silly, unpredictable errors which can be dangerous or even deadly. I know John's training has prepared me for this as best as it could.”
The ProScot Office
“I have nothing but the highest praise for the girls that work in the Office. They are incredibly helpful, friendly, and supportive in all aspects of the job. They are also incredibly invested in the success of ProScot, and you sense their pride in the business. They all have incredible amounts of knowledge about the industry and are very accessible - if you ask a question, you never have to wait long at all for an answer. The have always insured that I've had a full diary and kept a steady stream of new students coming my way at the rate I've felt comfortable dealing with. They are all good people and it's great to know as someone new to the industry that I have support locally who I can visit and see face to face and who won't judge me if I'm asking a silly question.”
John Macdonald
“Putting aside his industry knowledge and qualifications, John is an incredibly decent and honest man. My training was stopped twice due to the Covid lockdowns and having my first child. John was always supportive and flexible regarding my changing situations. After the 2nd lockdown, my Theory Test expired meaning I had to restart the whole ADI process. John could not have been supportive and worked tirelessly to get me back up to standard to get back out on the road on my Trainee Licence.”
“I'm now in the position where I can say I've passed my Part 3 exam and I'm a qualified and registered Driving Instructor. Given all the events of the last 3 years (global and personal) I can hand on heart say I would not be able to say that if I'd done my training anywhere other than ProScot".” Hide...

“During Covid 2020 I made the decision to change my career and take the plunge and become a driving instructor. First thing I did was look up what kind of process was needed to become an instructor and the idea of prices it would cost. Majority of the schools I looked at were big companies, high priced with low percentage of actual in car training given, mainly virtual learning. I felt like I would be just another number which was not ideal. I then came across Proscot, a local school based in Kirkcaldy and after reading through their current instructors’ testimonials and student reviews I thought I’d email them and see what happens. I didn’t expect to get an email back almost immediately then be on the phone to the director, John Macdonald the following day. First impressions were, john was professional and clearly knew his stuff while still coming across very friendly and easy to chat to, not the usual stuffy interview I’d been used to. After meeting up in person with john and Ingrid (who works in the office) I got a good gut feeling and felt I’d chosen the right company and hopefully they’d be happy to have me join their team.In a matter of weeks, I was on track through each training stage, Part 1: theory, Part 2: driving ability, Part 3: instructor ability. During each stage I felt like the amount of help and support given was well above and beyond what I ever expected it to be. Much of the theory side for each stage was done at home by me or over zoom calls with john and the other PDI’s in training. This helped as when it came to the in-car training portions majority of the information was already there and we could spend more time practicing the role play portion. John would role play as different styles of pupils at different skill levels to get us to adapt our training to suit the pupils needs. This most definitely came in handy when getting out on a badge as no 2 pupils are ever the same. The training for part 3 can be tough but john really helped me see my potential and that I needed to come out my shell and push further than I ever thought possible of myself. After around 6 months from the initial meeting, I was finally out on the trainee badge with real pupils and the next few months felt like a blur. The office girls were very helpful with any queries I had when first starting on trainee badge, they build up your diary very quickly. They provide you with as many pupils as is needed so you can start the first week slow and steady. Once I started seeing my pupil’s confidence grow and their driving abilities develop, I really started building my own confidence and knew this was the right decision I’d made. I passed the part 3 exam first time after some extra training with John and Archie (another ORDIT trainer helping ProScot) and officially became a qualified instructor in May 2023. I'm glad I found Proscot and feel like I’m becoming one of the team. I plan to keep doing this for many years to come as it has proven to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding careers I could have chosen.".” Hide...
