“If you are considering a change of career and thinking about becoming a Driving instructor then I would highly recommend that you take up John Macdonald's offer of free Instructor training with ProScot. I first met John in 1996, he was a motorcycle and driving instructor and I was an examiner at the time. I can assure you that you will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable and dedicated Instructor trainer than John. He will support you all the way to the end of your journey and he will not give up on you. You will see many National Driving Schools advertising their instructor training. My advice is to go nowhere near them. You will be talking to a salesman who will promise you the earth, but in my experience what you get will fall well short of what was promised. “He is not a salesman; he will tell you straight how difficult it will be and go through what will be expected from you. Don't be put-off by the fact that he is offering you free training. As we all know you get “nothing for nothing”” or “Nowt for Nowt” depending on which part of the country you come from. I spent 20 years with DSA/DVSA the last 10 of these 20 years I held the position of Supervising Examiner (ADI) where I was responsible for conducting ADI part two and ADI part three tests as well as conducting Check Tests (now renamed Standard Checks) on qualified ADI's and Fleet qualifying tests, also conducting ORDIT inspections. I've been a fully qualified driving instructor with Proscot since end of April 2023. Before I'd thought about becoming an instructor I worked in retail for almost 10 years, never feeling fulfilled. I ended up researching how to become an instructor and the abilities I needed and looking into different companies and the prices they charge. I then came across ProScot who were offering free training. They were a local, small company which was a big plus for me, I didn't want to be just another number like the larger UK wide franchises.

Once I met up with John Macdonald (ProScot's director) and we discussed the training process, I only had to wait a few hours before I was selected to train and join the team. John and the 3 girls in office (Ingrid, Amy and Kally) are all wonderful, very friendly, and happy to help with any questions you have, especially at the start as I had many. During the training I had moments where I got nervous and thought this was too hard and might not be for me but John never gave up and helped me push through and believe in myself.

Before the final test in April, I went through a final stage of training with John and Archie Douglas, another highly experienced trainer who helps out ProScot's PDI's with additional support.

Archie is also a retired senior examiner, he's patient and knows his stuff. He watches us during real lessons with pupils and helps to fix any problems you're having. Then with their final guidance and support I managed to pass on my first try. John was even there waiting to give me a hug after I'd passed, I couldn't even believe it happened.

I'm so grateful I carried on and didn't give up, as now I see what a rewarding career being an instructor can be. Getting to see your pupils start from scratch having never been in a driver's seat and a big bag of nerves, to that final day when they pass with confidence and having the biggest grin ever, it's one of the best feelings you could imagine.
