Driving tests: Guide for learners

Test Changes - 2017

Theory Test

You must pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical driving test. Make sure you book your test directly through the official website GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/book-theory-test

Beware of third-party sites that will charge you extra money!

The theory test is a two-part test. Consisting of both multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips. You must pass both parts to gain an overall pass.

(Needs a multiple-choice video image clip here to break it up)

Multiple Choice:

The pass rate for multiple choice section of the theory test is 86%, you have 57 minutes to sit the multiple-choice part (yes, I know weird number, but this is to give you a break of up to 3 minutes before you start the Hazard perception test, you don’t need to use the full 57 minutes). A question with several possible answers appears on the screen you must pick the right one. You can “flag” questions and move on and then come back to them again. You can also go back, review and change any of your answers. You will need to score 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions correctly. The questions are based on three books “The Highway Code”, “Know your traffic signs” and “Driving – the essential skills”. The theory cover topics that include alertness, attitude, safety, road signs, and much more.

Hazard Perception

A short video will play before the hazard perception part of the test begins to show you how the test works. You’ll then watch 14 video clips. The clips:

  • feature everyday road scenes
  • contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips features 2 developing hazards

You will get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen. A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.

Example
A car is parked at the left-hand side of the road and is not doing anything. It would not cause you to take action, so it’s not a developing hazard.

However, as you get closer, the car’s right-hand indicator starts to flash, and it starts to move away. You’d need to slow down, as it is now a developing hazard. You can score up to a maximum of 5 points for each developing hazard. The sooner you click for the developing hazard the higher your score will be, one of the clips will have two scoreable hazards for a maximum of 10 points. If you click rhythmically or continuously or for no thought for what you see you will more than likely score zero for that clip.

To get a high score, click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop.

You must score a minimum of 44 out of 75 to pass the hazard perception part of the theory test.

Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you’ll have to pass the theory test again.

Practical Test

Our highly rated and experienced driving instructors will make sure you are fully trained and well prepared to sit your practical driving test.

Like the theory test, you should make sure you book your practical test directly through the official website GOV.UK

https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test?step-by-step-nav=e01e924b-9c7c-4c71-8241-66a575c2f61f

Beware of third-party sites that will charge you extra money!

You must take

  • your UK driving licence
  • your theory test pass certificate if you have it
  • a car - most people use their driving instructors, but you can use your own car if it meets the rules

There are 5 parts to the driving test:

  • an eyesight check
  • ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
  • general driving ability
  • reversing your vehicle
  • independent driving

The test is the same for both manual and automatic cars. The test lats for around 40 minutes.

1. Eyesight check

You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:

  • 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
  • 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate

New-style number plates start with 2 letters followed by 2 numbers, such as AB51 ABC.

You’ll fail your driving test if you fail the eyesight check. The test will end.

(Needs a driving school car image clip, with the bonnet up for the show me/tell me here to break it up)

2. Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the “tell me” and “show me” questions.

You’ll be asked the:

  • ‘tell me’ question at the start of your test, before you start driving
  • ‘show me’ question while you’re driving

3. Your general driving ability

You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. The examiner will give you directions that you should follow. Driving test routes are not published, so you cannot check them before your test.

You’ll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test, including:

  • normal stops at the side of the road
  • pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
  • a hill start

You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

4. Reversing your vehicle:

The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises:

  • parallel park at the side of the road
  • park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
  • pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and re-join the traffic

(Needs a driving school car image clip here to break it up)

5. Independent driving

You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:

  • directions from a sat nav
  • traffic signs

The examiner will tell you which you have to follow. They’ll set the sat nav up for you. You cannot use your own sat nav. If you cannot see a traffic sign (for example, because it’s covered by trees), the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next one. The examiner will not give you a fault for taking a wrong turning. They’ll help you get back on the route if you do.

Driving test faults and your result

There are 3 types of faults you can make:

1. A dangerous fault - this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property

2. A serious fault - something potentially dangerous

3. A driving fault - this is not potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault

Pass mark

You’ll pass your driving test if you make:

  • no more than 15 driving faults (sometimes called ‘minors’)
  • no serious or dangerous faults (sometimes called ‘majors’)

If you pass your test

The examiner will:

  • tell you what faults you made, if any

give you a pass certificate
